FOSTERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN OPERA CREATORS

Kevin Calixte Photography

Who is M3F?

We are a Canadian ensemble and non-profit organization committed to fostering the next generation of women-identifying opera creators! Founded in 2018 by coloratura soprano Suzanne Rigden, mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff, and pianist Jennifer Szeto, M3F is inspired by our desire to see more female creative leadership in our industry and create a platform which could nurture innovative works, create new opportunities, and support emerging talent.

What do we do?

Through our biennial award, the $50,000 Mécénat Musica Prix 3 Femmes, we help develop new operas by teams of emerging women-identifying Canadian composers and librettists. The prize supports artists with:

- seed funding for new creations

- mentorship with industry professionals

- travel/accommodation stipends

- musical & staging workshops

- over 200 hours of rehearsal and development time with professional musicians

& WORKS

CECILIA LIVINGSTON & MONICA PEARCE

SINGING ONLY SOFTLY explores the complex character of Anne Frank, with a libretto inspired by the redacted entries from her famous diary. Concept/development by Alaina Viau and additional support by Ontario Arts Council in partnership with LooseTEA Music Theatre)

LAURENCE JOBIDON & PASCALE ST-ONGE

L’HIVER ATTEND BEAUCOUP DE MOI (Winter asks so much of me) explores life in the beautiful and savage landscape of Northern Quebec. Pregnant Léa attempts to reach a safe house in an oncoming storm, guided by a mysterious stranger Madeleine. The opera speaks to the strength and solidarity between women in the face of unspeakable grief and tragedy. With support by Opéra de Montréal and OdM Atelier Lyrique

MARIA ATALLAH & ALICE ABRACEN

After her best friend dies in a tragic accident, Melanie returns to school locked in a world of her own thoughts and numb to her peers' well wishes. THE CHAIR explores grief and how we choose to move on from those we've lost.

MARGARETA JERIC & NAIMA KRISTEL PHILLIPS

A woman returns to a place where she fell in love. She finds a piano on a heap of rubble. An exploration of the anatomy of a piano, SUITES D'UNE VILLE MORTE (Ghost Town Suites) examines the interplay of loss and connection in a world where everything can change in an instant. Based on the original play by Naima Kristel Phillips.

KENDRA HARDER & MICHELLE TELFORD

BOOK OF FACES is the second collaboration by Harder and Telford - an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek operatic take on the many faces of social media through oratorio form.

With Thanks

Musique 3 Femmes would like to acknowledge the generosity of our workshop partners and hosts who helped to make the 5 operas of the inaugural Mécénat Musica Prix 3 Femmes possible: Opera McGill, Tapestry Opera, SOCAN Foundation, and the Canada Council for the Arts!
